Mount Eliza is a suburb south-east of
Melbourne,
Victoria,
Australia. It is in the
Local Government Area of the
Shire of Mornington Peninsula. Its
postcode is 3930.
History
Mount Eliza was named in
1836 by Captain
William Hobson after Elizabeth Callaghan, the wife of
John Batman.
Prior to large scale
subdivision, Mount Eliza was mainly a location for holiday homes. This began to change in the early half of the 20th century when many old estates were subdivided. One such subdivision was Ranelagh Estate

Geography
The suburb is bordered by
Kackeraboite Creek, Humphries Road,
Moorooduc Highway, Wooralla Drive, the
Mornington railway line, Oakbank Road,
Manyung Creek and
Port Phillip bay.
There is a bay (and Suburb area) called
Canadian Bay, that has had the name since the late 19th century.
Mount Eliza Village
The town centre is known as Mount Eliza Village, and is the main shopping area for the suburb. Situated at the corner of Canadian Bay Road and Mount Eliza Way, the village is a bustling centre of activity and is well served by many businesses, including all four major banks.
Two major supermarkets, Ritchies (
IGA) and
Safeway can be found along with many speciality shops.
It is home to many great cafes, specialising in breakfast and lunches.
Some good restaurants can also be found including: Conrad's Pizza Restaurant, Verde and Licciardos.
Local Sports
There are many sporting clubs in Mount Eliza, but most notably is the Mount Eliza Football Club which had produced many
AFL players including 3 in the last 2 years.
There is also
Mt Eliza Cricket Club which is one of the most successful Cricket Clubs on the Mornington Peninsula with 10 First Eleven premierships and a total of more than 55, including the Juniors. During the 1980’s the Club was heralded as the largest cricket club in Australia with 9 Senior teams and 8 Junior teams.
Schools
There is a good range of schools in Mt. Eliza, including Kunyung Primary School,
The Peninsula School,
Toorak College, Mt. Eliza Secondary College, Mt. Eliza Primary School, Mt. Eliza North Primary School, and
St. Thomas More Catholic Primary School. Also the Mt. Eliza / Melbourne Business School.
Transport
Mount Eliza is served by two major roadways, the
Nepean Highway and
Moorooduc Highway.
The
bus routes
- 781
- 784 & 785
- 788
pass through the main shopping strip of the suburb.
The bus routes 772 and 773 pass through the area known locally as Eliza Heights, but are mainly part of the
Frankston South suburb.
All bus routes are serviced by
Peninsula Passenger Service (operated by
Grenda).
